Sales attendant in court over GH¢94,250.00 theft

A sales assistant has run into trouble with the law over the theft of cash of GH¢94,250.00 belonging to his employer.

Joseph Kwabena Owusu had been given the money to pay for a consignment of rice but disappeared with it.

He was on Wednesday put before a Kumasi Circuit Court, presided over by Mrs. Helen Vivian Amoah, charged with stealing and pleaded not guilty.

The court granted him a GH¢150,000.00 with four sureties - one to be justified.

Owusu was ordered to make his next appearance on Tuesday, January 16.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Doris Amewu, told the told the court that the accused was sent with the cash by his employer, Ms. Comfort Aikens, to convey a consignment of rice, ordered from a supplier in neighboring Cote d’Ivoire.

That was in the first week of November, last year, and for three weeks the rice had not arrived only for Owusu to call to inform her on phone that the consignment was not yet ready.

The accused’s story was, however, contradicted by the supplier and efforts at tracking him down were unsuccessfully until December 21, when he was spotted at Tepa in the Ahafo-Ano North District and arrested.

The prosecution said he confessed to the crime in his caution statement but gave the excuse that he was attacked and robbed of the money by criminals in Cote d’ Ivoire.
