Rural Bank Manager steals bank money

Assin Foso (C/R), Jan. 21, GNA - Mr Theophilus Akonpong, the Assin Akonfodi branch manage of the Akotsi Rural Bank, was on Friday granted bail GH=A225,000 bail with a surety to be justified by the Assin Foso district magistrate court for embezzling GH=A227,589.30. With him in the dock was Eugene Ampaabeng a tailor of Assin Akonfodi Montibel Angel Group Limited, charged with stealing. They both pleaded not guilty.

Prosecuting Deputy Superintendent of Police George Hlordzi told the court that Akonpong was the manager of Assin Akonfodi branch of the bank and in June 2007 he rec eived cheques amounting to GH=A227,589.30 on behalf of the bank.

Akonpong suppressed the cheques and later paid the said cheques into the accounts of Montibel Angels Group Limited. Akonpong then connived with Ampaabeng, an employee of the company who used counterfeit cheques with the company's stamp to withdraw GH=A222,000 from the bank.

He said Akonpong was arrested when the bank's accounts were audited and he mentioned Ampaabeng as his accomplice.
