Police still guarding Asogli plant

Police personnel are still stationed at the Sunon Asogli Power Plant in Kpone near Tema, a day after irate youth of the town threatened to burn down the plant.

The youth on Tuesday demonstrated throughout the town clad in red and chanting war songs with some wielding cutlasses and stones to register their displeasure on a number of issues including the operations of Sunon Asogli in Kpone.

On Wednesday at about 0800 hours when the Ghana News Agency visited the town, police water cannon was positioned at the entrance of the plant with armed personnel at the gate.

There was however no police presence in the town and the Kpone Traditional Council (KTC) offices was still locked with red bands tied at the entrance.

Even though the town was generally calm as people went about their normal business, red flags mounted on the electrical poles in the town by the youth during the demonstration were still flying.

The irate youth on Tuesday, demolished a fenced wall built by an investor on part of the cemetery land and set ablaze their site office, they also marched to the traditional council to lock up the place.

Over fourteen youth and seven police personnel sustained various degrees of injuries when the youth clashed with the police who tried to stop them from going to the Traditional Council.

They pelted the Police with stones and bottles while the police responded with tear gas and rubber bullets.

In a petition, the youth among other things, called on Asogli to provide them with constant free electricity, give them a representation on the company’s board as well as sign a Memorandum of Understanding (MoU) with the Traditional Council.
