Nursing mother in court for injuring secretary's face

A nursing mother who is accused of inflicting blade wounds on the face of a secretary at Osu, an Accra suburb, after verbal exchanges has been put before an Accra Circuit Court.

Rachael Adotey has been charged with causing harm, but she has pleaded not guilty.

The court, presided over by Mr W. Essandoh, granted Rachael bail in the sum of GH¢ 2,000 with two sureties to reappear on September 9.

The nursing mother is, however, to report to the Police every Monday and Wednesday. She is also to sign a bond of good behavior pending the determination of the case.

On Wednesday, Rachael, a trader, was remanded into police custody by the court. However, his counsel, Mr Jerry Avernogbor, filed an application for bail saying the accused person was a nursing mother who was breastfeeding a seven-month old baby.

According to counsel, the baby had not been weaned hence following her incarceration, the baby had been sent to the hospital twice.

This, the counsel noted, was creating some difficulties for the baby so he prayed the court to admit her client to bail.

Consequently, the court granted the defense counsel’s submission and admitted Rachael to bail.

Prosecuting, Chief Inspector Francis A. Tassan, did not object to the bail but pleaded with the court to subject Rachael to sign a bond to be of good behavior pending the determination of the case.

The facts, as presented by the prosecutor, were that both the complainant Laila Nartey and Rachael resided in the same house at Osu.

On August 23, at about 1810 hours, the complainant, Laila, was about to go out with a friend when Rachael started abusing Laila, describing her as “’a Village Champion.’’

Chief Inspector Tassan said the two were separated from fighting twice.

The Prosecutor said after the two had been separated, the accused person attacked the complainant with blade and inflicted deep wounds on her left cheek and upper left eyelid.

The complainant reported the incident to the Police and Rachael was arrested.
