Man and ex-wife arraigned for murder

Mampongteng (Ash.) June 19, GNA - A 43-year old farmer, Kwaku Addae was on Wednesday arraigned for murder and remanded into prison custody by the Mampongteng District Magistrate Court.

His plea was not taken and he would re-appear on July 5. An ex-wife of the accused, Ama Serwaah, who is standing trial with him for abetment of crime was however, granted bail in the sum of 50 million cedis with a surety to justify.

Police Inspector Ben Apuriyure told the court, presided over by Mr. Uuter P. Dery that the accused persons were married for 20 years and lived together at Krobo in the Kwabre district until recently when Serwaah abandoned the marriage and went in for another man. Addae did not take kindly to this development and jealously mounted surveillance on Serwaah and her new found lover Osei Kwabena. Police Inspector Apuriyure said the deceased, Mr Akwasi Abayie, was on his way to visit a friend in a house where Serwaah also lives on Monday, June 12, when the accused mistook him for Osei and struck him hard on the head with an object, killing him instantly. He went into hiding after committing the crime but was arrested the same day.

The court, in granting bail to Serwaah, took into consideration the fact that the prosecution failed to link her to the crime as the charge against her was merely based on suspicion.
