Haruna Iddrisu?s campaign manager arrested

The campaign manager for Haruna Iddrisu, the Member of Parliament for Tamale Central, Mohammed Aboage, 22, and an accomplice, Abdul Alhassan, a 23-year old farmer, have appeared before a Tamale Circuit Court for allegedly possessing sophisticated weapons (revolver), which according to sources are licensed for use only by security personnel.

The two were however granted bail until Friday by the court, chaired by Justice Angelina Mensah-Horinih, due to the fact that the case was above the jurisdiction of the court. The case has therefore been forwarded to the Attorney General?s office for further advice.

A source close to the police told The Statesman that on Tuesday April 18, when people were travelling to Yendi to prepare and witness the installation of a new Regent for Dabgon, the Yendi military intercepted a military border a hired public vehicle on which the two accused persons were travelling. Upon searching the car, they found the two weapons, and after questioning Mohammed

Aboage claimed ownership to one which was loaded with about 20 rounds of ammunitions. The other accused person claimed the other one which was not loaded belonged to him, but neither of the accused could tell the police where they heading towards with guns.

They were then arrested and handed over to the Yendi Police who later sent them to Tamale where they were processed for court but they were remanded to reappear on Monday April 24, 2006. The two were however discharged and granted bail by the court due to the fact that it had no jurisdiction to hear and prosecute them.

The case has therefore been adjourned to May 28 while the docket has been forwarded to the Attorney General?s Department pending advice.
