Fisherman, 70, stabbed to death

A 70-year-old fisherman at Mantukwa near the banks of River Afram, has been cruelly murdered by a Fulani herdsman for no apparent reason.

Aklika Kpodi, the deceased, was returning home after going for fishing when Mohammadu Abubakar, 20, confronted him on the way in a dangerous manner.

The Fulani Herdsman, who was in possession of a sharp knife, overpowered the 70-year-old man, slitting his stomach with the knife without provocation.

Kpodi, whose stomach was wide open with his intestines gushing out, fell onto the ground and bled profusely until he finally gave up the ghost.

Abubakar after committing the heinous crime around 5am on August 31, this year, then fled the scene and went into hiding, ostensibly, to escape arrest.

DCOP Kofi Boakye, the Ashanti Regional Police Commander, said the dastardly matter was then reported to the police who quickly started to investigate.

Addressing the media in Kumasi on Tuesday, he said the police upon a tip-off, realized that the Fulani herdsman was hiding at Ananekrom near Agogo.

The police, he narrated, on September 2, 2015, rushed to Ananekrom and managed to apprehend Abubakar from his hiding place to face the law.

DCOP Kofi Boakye said Abubakar in his caution statement admitted that indeed he was the one that killed the fisherman in the dark on that fateful day.

He said the Fulani herdsman had since been remanded by the court pending further investigation to unravel the motive for killing the old man.

DCOP Kofi Boakye used the occasion to admonish the populace to live acceptable lifestyles in order not to have issues with the law.

He stated that the police are firmly in control of the security situation of the region therefore any lawbreaker would be arrested for prosecution.

Citing the Fulani herdsman’s case as an example, the police chief said criminals that go into hiding after committing crime would eventually be arrested.

“You can run but you can’t hide,” DCOP Kofi Boakye stated emphatically, noting that the police are battle ready to flush out criminals from the area.

He appealed to the public to feed the police with vital information that would lead to the arrest of criminals before they even attempt to strike.
