Farmer remanded for fraud

Mankranso (Ash), April 11, GNA - A magistrate's court at Mankranso has remanded a 49-year-old farmer from Dwenewoho in the Ahafo-Ano South District of Ashanti for fraud.

John Oppong, who pleaded guilty to the charge, will be brought before the court again on April 11.

Oppong was said to have defrauded Tuse Akenlango, also a farmer to the tune of 2.5 million cedis.

Police Inspector Abraham Agyei-Mensah told the court presided over by Mr Frank Owusu-Afriyie that on January 23, this year, Oppong promised to find admission for Akenlango's daughter Afua Theresa at the Agogo Presbyterian Nurses Training College and therefore collected the money ostensibly to use to influence officials of the College. He said after collecting the money, Oppong fled the town till March 16, this year when upon a tip-off police arrested the accused at his hideout at the Mankranso Market.

Inspector Agyei-Mensah said in his caution statement, Oppong confessed to collecting the money and mentioned one Francis Addo at the College as the person he gave the money to but police investigations revealed that there was nobody in the school bearing such a name.
