Court grants bail to Cafe Attendant

An Accra Circuit Court on Wednesday granted Roland Mensah, a Cafe Attendant a bail of GH¢5,000.00 with two sureties to be justified.

He was charged for conspiracy to commit crime, stealing, abetment of crime and attempt to commit crime.

The accused pleaded not guilty and would re-appear on November 3.

Prosecuting Officer, Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Ernest Acheampong told the court, presided over by Mr Francis Obiri, that the complainant is a fitter and resides at West Legon.

He said the complainant is a friend of the accused person and they had known each other for three years, while the accused person used to sleep in the complainant’s room when the he travels.

He said on August 15, at about 06:00, the complainant was lodging at the Merciful Hotel at Alajo in room 101 and whilst there, the hotel cleaner, one Akwesi Nyarko received a visitor by name Malan, who alleged that he was sent by the complainant to buy him food.

He said Akwesi, who was not convinced told Malan to wait at the reception for him to contact the complainant.

He said when the complainant was contacted, he denied having sent Malan.

The prosecution said some minutes later, four men came to the Hotel premises with three of them wearing Ghana Immigration Service uniforms and tried to force their way to the complainant’s room together with Malan.

DSP Acheampong said complainant sensing danger ran through one of the windows and left his Samsung Note 3 mobile phone, one LG phone, S.C.T phone, a wrist watch and a spray all valued at GH?6,200.00.

Malan and the others therefore stole the afore-mentioned items and a complaint was lodged.

Roland was arrested and in his cautioned statement, he admitted having conspired with his accomplices and directed the police to the location.

The accused person could not however assist the police to trace the accomplices for interrogation.
