Church thief jailed seven years

A Kumasi Circuit Court has sentenced an 18-year-old unemployed to seven years imprisonment over the theft of two speakers and an amplifier valued at GHc2,000.00, the property of the Friendship Assemblies of God Church.

Mohammed Shaibu, together with three others, whose names were given as Ahmed, Yussif and Burger, and are on the run, broke into the Nwamase M/A Junior High School near Kumasi where the items were being kept.

He was convicted after he pleaded guilty to the charges of conspiracy, unlawful entry and stealing.

Police Chief Inspector Comfort Baffour-Kyei told the court presided over by Mr Emmanuel Amoh-Yartey that Shaibu was arrested at a barrier mounted by the police at the Agric Junction on September 2, at about 0100 hours.

This was when a taxi carrying him and his three other colleagues pulled up at the barrier and the items uncovered during a search of the car.

The prosecution said sensing danger the four took to their heels, but Shaibu was arrested.

He was handed over to the Suntreso police for questioning, and he confessed to the crime, saying they had planned to sell the stolen items.

The speakers and the amplifier were later identified by a Pastor of the church, the Reverend Douglas Oppong.
