Barber sentenced 15 years

Kumasi, Sept. 1, GNA - Ato Kwamena, a barber in Kumasi, who robbed a trader and inflicted cutlass wounds on her, has been sentenced to 15 years imprisonment by a Kumasi Circuit Court.

Kwamena pleaded guilty to the offence.

Deputy Superintendent of Police (DSP) Regina Addo-Yobo told the court, presided over by Mr Justice D.W.P.Amedior, that Hagar Nyamekye, the victim and her husband deal in mobile phone credit recharge cards at Ayigya, a Kumasi suburb, where Kwamena also lives.

On August 6, 2010, at about 21:00 hours, while the complainant and her children were asleep, Kwamena took advantage of the husband, who had traveled, disguised himself with a face mask and armed with a cutlass, broke into their room.

The complainant, who was woken from her sleep by the unusual noise, saw Kwamena with a masked face stealing the cards.

Instinctively, she raised the alarm, which angered Kwamena, and in the process of struggling with the victim, he inflicted cutlass wounds on her left hand and bolted, leaving the face mask and his pair of footwear behind.

A complaint was then made to the Police and on August 15, and their investigations led to his arrest.

He admitted to the offence in his caution statement.
