Armed robber jailed 35 years in hard labour

Kumasi, June 3, GNA - The Kumasi Metropolitan Assembly (KMA) Circuit Court has sentenced a 19-year-old to 35 years imprisonment in hard labour for robbery. Justice Kojo Owusu Amoah pleaded guilty to the charge. Police Chief Inspector Isaac Apenteng, giving the facts to the Court presided over by Mr. Adjei Frimpong said Amoah a self acclaimed blacksmith together with his two accomplices now at large, robbed the complainant, Yaw Abanga on May 28, 2009 at 3:30 am. He explained that Abanga with his six year-old boy had travelled from the Upper East Region and were on their way from the Race Course to Kejetia to board a vehicle to Wirebuoso near Nkawie where they resided. At a point, Amoah and his accomplices, whom he named as Fatau and "School boy," robbed him of his mobile phone, a luggage containing an amount of GH¢500 as well as his personal effects at knife point and bolted.

Luckily for Abanga, he met a taxi driver who volunteered to help him arrest the robbers after hearing his plight. After the taxi moved a few metres from where Abanga was robbed, Amoah was apprehended after a hot chase with the help of passers-by at Mbrom. The other accomplices however, managed to escape. Chief Inspector Apenteng said he was then handed over to the police and during interrogation, he admitted the offence.
