5 Fined for attacking Cop

Five people, including a woman, have been found guilty by the Juaso Magistrate Court for violently attacking a policeman whose uniform got torn in the process.

They are Doris Serwah, Kofi Elijah, Sulley Issah, Daniel Sika and Kwame Tutu. They reportedly attacked the policeman who was on duty at Noboam in the Effigyase District of the Ashanti Region.

The court, presided over by Frederick Tetteh, ordered them to sew a new uniform for the policeman and also made them sign a bond for one year to be of good behaviour.

They were in addition fined Ghc660.00 each for violently attacking two staff members of the Electricity Company of Ghana (ECG) who were on mass revenue collection duty at Noboam.

Again, the five were ordered by the court to buy a new plastic chair and other items which they destroyed, belonging to another man, whom they attacked on suspicion that he (man) showed the police their houses.

Briefing the court, Inspector Thomas Obour said on March 3, 2015, the ECG staffs were on mass revenue collection at Noboam when from nowhere the five people pounced on them.

Three armed policemen were called to the scene and their presence temporarily ensured peace. But the attempt of the policemen to arrest a certain man, believed to be leader of the mob, ignited confusion.

The mob resisted the police’s attempt to arrest the man and even defied the warning shots fired by the policemen as they attacked the law enforcement agents in broad daylight.

Police reinforcement, in three pickups, then rushed to the place and they were able to arrest the five people who were later arraigned before the Juaso Magistrate Court.

Meanwhile, Erasmus Kyere Baidoo, the Ashanti Regional ECG, Public Relations Officer, admonished the public to refrain from attacking ECG staffs that come around to collect revenue on behalf of the company, stressing that it is unlawful to do that.

He also commended the police for always assisting the ECG to apprehend people that take the law into their hands by violently attacking its staffs.
