NUGS faces imminent ejection

Accra, Oct. 31, GNA - The National Union of Ghana Students (NUGS) on Monday said it was in urgent need of a permanent secretariat, as it faced imminent ejection from its present premises at the GFA building.

The NUGS has, therefore, appealed to the Government and all others "who share in the ideals of NUGS" to come to its aid.

A release signed by Samuel Okudzeto Ablaka, President of NUGS, said the Union had appealed to the Government on countless occasions for a permanent secretariat, as was the case in most countries. It said it was worth noting that NUGS had since independence played a huge role in fighting for democracy in Ghana and ensuring that education became a right and not a privilege.

NUGS said it was sad that with such a legacy, it had only been a victim of political promises by successive governments.

"Meanwhile we remain at the mercy of the Ejection Committee of the Ministry of Works and Housing," the release said.

A letter to NUGS dated October 26 2005 and signed by F. B. Aasoyir, Director (F&A) for the Head of the Civil Service, warned NUGS to vacate its present premises by Monday October 31 2005, or face forceful ejection.

"I refer to my two letters to you in June and August 2005 requesting you to vacate the building to allow restructuring works to be undertaken," the letter stated.

"We have found out (this afternoon) that you have refused to vacate the premises thereby obstructing the work being undertaken by the contractor. This behaviour can no longer be tolerated." The letter informed the NUGS that this was the final ejection notice, adding that copies of the notice had been sent to the Ejection Committee of the Ministry of Works and Housing, which had been notified to stand by for further action.
