Suspected-armed robber arrested by Police

Kumasi, Sept 29, GNA - One of the suspected armed robbers, who broke into the Amansie West Rural Bank at Antoakrom three months ago has been arrested by the Police.

The suspect, Kwasi Alhassan, 21, a casual labourer at Ghassoub Sawmill in Kumasi, was arrested at dawn on Wednesday, when together with two other accomplices, now on the run robbed a Kumasi-based trader, Miss Sophia Amoah at Adum of her jewellery and 200,000 cedis cash.

Deputy Superintedent of Police (DSP) Sylvester Y. Amponsah, Deputy Ashanti Regional Crime Officer, told newsmen that Miss Amoah, who alighted from a taxi near the UTC overhead bridge was walking towards the State Transport Company (STC) yard when she was attacked.

DSP Amponsah, said Miss Amoah was booted down by Alhassan while the two others took away her hand-bag and travelling bag. He said she shouted for help and some people who came around chased them and arrested Alhassan while the two others abandoned the travelling bag and took to their heels.

The Deputy Regional Crime Officer said when Alhassan was searched a stern gun without the butt and two screwdrivers were found on him. He said the butt of the stern gun, which was taken away from the Policeman on duty during the robbery at Antoakrom and in the custody of the police fitted into the stern gun found on Alhassan.

DSP Amponsah said during interrogation, Alhassan confessed that he together with the two accomplices were members of the armed robbers, who broke into the rural bank and made away with several millions of cedis.

He said after investigations the suspect would be sent to Accra for further investigations into the Antoakrom robbery by the anti-robbery squad.
