Why wouldn't I endorse Mahama? - Education Minister

The Education Minister, Prof. Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang has questioned why she should not endorse President John Dramani Mahama to be retained as President of the Republic of Ghana.

She was speaking with Kwame Tutu on Rainbow Radio 87.5FM. Her answer was premised on a the question that, since she is not an active politician and was appointed based on her competence and for the purpose of an all inclusive governance, was going to endorse President Mahama.

The first female Vice Chancellor for the University of Cape Coast when asked if she will endorse President Mahama had this to say.

''What a question! Why wouldn't i endorse him? What kind of question is that? Why wouldn't i endorse him?''

Professor Opoku-Agyemang taught and worked at the University of Cape Coast, starting in 1986. She has held various academic positions including Head of the Department of English, Dean of the Faculty of Arts, Warden of Adehye Hall, Valco Trust Fund Post-Graduate Hostel, and Dean of School of Graduate Studies and Research. From 1997, she has held the position of Academic Director of the School for International Training in the History and Cultures of the African Diaspora. From 2008-2012 she was the University's Vice Chancellor.

In March, 2007, she was one of five scholars selected to deliver presentations during the 200th Anniversary of the Abolition of Slavery at the United Nations Headquarters in New York.


In October 2009, she was elected Ghana's representative to the Executive Board of the United Nations Educational, Scientific and Cultural Organisation (UNESCO).

Professor Jane Naana Opoku Agyemang and Kwadwo Oppong Nkrumah moderated the 2012 Presidential debates organized by the IEA.

She was then a Vice Chancellor of the University of Cape Coast. She was appointed Education Minister after President Mahama won the 2012 General Elections.
