US MOVE CONSTITUTES BLACKMAIL - MP

INTRODUCTION

Mr. Ken Dzirasah, second Deputy Speaker of Parliament and MP for South Tongu, has lambasted the government of the USA over its move to lobby some nations to enter into a treaty of no surrender with it. – The Independent 3/4/03

Baako - The debate on the ratification of the treaty of no surrender between USA and Ghana still continues in parliament and the minority has started lambasting the government. It is not a rubber stamp but a bilateral agreement. The government will get $4 million dollars from the agreement. We are not selling Ghana cheap because we are a sovereign nation. We have a sovereign parliament and we have the right to engage in the ratification of a treaty. Parliament is an open forum and they must critically analyse the agreement. The American government is assisting Ghana in the supply of military equipment and they are also offering training for our soldiers in the USA. They have also supplied our hospitals with drugs and essential tools. Their military medical team were able to perform eye treatment in the country.

Awal - Parliament has not been a rubber stamp in the ratification of the non surrender pact. Some of the MPs in the minority are in favour of the ratification of the non-surrender pact. About 24 African states are in favour of the pact, and they have all signed the agreement. There is lack of information flow between the majority, the minority and the media. This has resulted in distortion of facts and figures. The government information machinery should begin to educate the public on the treaty and the benefit Ghana will derive from it.

THE LAW ON CAUSING FINANCIAL LOSS TO THE STATE: AMEND OR REPEAL IT = SAM JONAH

INTRODUCTION

Dr. Sam Esson Jonah, Chief Executive Officer of Ashanti Goldfields Company Limited, has said that the law on ‘causing financial loss to the state’ undermines effective decision-making and provides public officials an excuse for non-performance. – The Daily Graphic

Baako - Before Justice Afreh went on retirement, he told the judiciary that he was not happy with the interpretation of the law on causing financial loss to the state. Dr. Sam Jonah, the Chief Executive of Ashanti Goldfields Company, is also advising parliament and Ghana government to abolish or review the law because it encourages people not to perform effectively to achieve government aims and objectives. We should encourage ministers of state to initiate projects and exhibit effective governance. I think the parliament of Ghana should start the debate and try to review the law in future.

Awal - Most ministers and chief directors are not taking action or showing initiative because of the fear of causing financial loss. Chief executives and directors should create new ideas in the performance of their official duties. Many public and civil service workers are afraid to take initiative. We must take steps to remove or review the law in future.

FRAUD ALERT: VASWANI BROS. OPERATING IN GHANA

INTRODUCTION

Three dangerous Indian British brothers who were recently deported from Nigeria, Makesh Sunil and Haresh Vaswani are in brisk business in Ghana. The Vaswani brothers are linked to an automobile company in Accra. Honda Place (GH) Ltd., which has three persons, Sunil Vaswani, Haresh Vaswani and Rita Vaswani as directors. – The Independent

Baako - Many corrupt businessmen from Lagos come to Ghana to continue with their business. These Indian brothers have been banned in Nigeria for their dangerous and criminal activities. We should not allow them in Accra because they were deported from Nigeria and they may continue to engage in corrupt business activities in Accra.

Awal - The three Indian British brothers may be dangerous. We should not allow them to operate business in this country. We should send them back to their country of origin.
