Electronic Media Monitoring: Summary Of Phone-Ins

PEACE FM PHONE-INS

? If Ghanaians will be honest enough to honour their tax obligations, there will be no need for the President to travel around seeking foreign support. We are the same people who accuse him of travelling unnecessarily.

? Those witnesses, who appear before the National Reconciliation Commission, should know that, even though most of their allegations are against former President Rawlings, he has done a lot for Ghana. It was the circumstances that prevailed at that time that caused events to happen.

? There are certain members of the NDC whose parents suffered atrocities and torture , but because of their opportunistic nature they joined the NDC . These are the same people who are defending June 4 and the PNDC.

? The government should not bring in any foreign investigators to revisit the issue of the murder of the Ya Na. Those who are advocating this, should have appeared before the Wuako Commission to give evidence, so why are they now ready to give evidence to a foreign team of investigators?

? Ex-President Rawlings came with slogans such as probity and accountability but he failed to punish his secretaries and ministers, and even signed a white paper, after CHRAJ had found some of the ministers guilty.

? Rawlings couldn’t take action against them but only removed them from office to enjoy their booty. Ibrahim Adam’s case was a typical example, so the NDC should stop its corruption campaign against the NPP government.

RADIO GOLD PHONE-INS

? I do not think ex-president Rawlings has any problem with President Kufuor. It is rather the NPP and NDC parties that have a problem, so there is no need for any reconciliation between them.

? The monies used to finance National Reconciliation Commission could have been used to support education in the country, because the NRC has failed in its duty to reconcile Ghanaians. The Commission was set up purposely to be used against ex-President Rawlings and the NDC.

? Most witnesses who have appeared before the NRC lied against former President Rawlings while the Commission looked on. Members of the Commission should be bold enough to point it out to witnesses if they find out that they (witnesses) are lying.

? Ex-President Rawlings took power by force in 1979 because according to him, there was corruption in the system. His slogans Probity, Accountability and Integrity couldn’t work as he and his men seized gold and foreign monies from the wealthy in society, especially the Lebanese and Syrians.

? Rawlings should be made to account for the gold and foreign monies he took from Obuasi Goldmines and what his men seized from the Lebanese businessmen and the Siaw family – Adabuga confessed this at the NRC.

? If the police have been able to arrest the girl who killed her Lebanese boyfriend in Kumasi, after she had escaped, why couldn’t they arrest a single person involved in the murder of the Ya Na?

KANAWU

? The NPP government is always failing in its attempt to put things down people’s throats. If Dr. Afari-Djan had not been firm, the government would have formed a procurement committee to purchase electoral materials fro NEC. The NPP should always consult stakeholders before coming out with decisions.

? The headmistress of Labone Secondary School is intentionally delaying the admission of students who have gained entry to the school. This is one of the means some heads of schools use to compel parents to pay bribes.

? President Kufuor’s response to the Transparency International (TI) report on corruption is unfortunate. For a President to say that he won’t act unless there is proven evidence should not be taken lightly. This government is the most corrupt government Ghana has had.

? Sometime ago, when the NDC flagbearer, Prof. Atta Mills, relied on a Daily Graphic report on Ghana to accuse the government, they came out to defend themselves by saying that the Graphic report was not accurate. The NPP is again refusing to accept the TI report on corruption in Ghana.

? The population of Accra is growing daily so the Town and Country Planning Department should consider expanding our roads, drains and other facilities so as to accommodate more vehicles and waste water. This will help the government save funds for reconstruction in future.

? Those who are claiming that there is no bad blood between President Kufuor and ex-President Rawlings are not abreast with events. What would happen if these two were to meet at the same function? We could imagine the atmosphere that will be created.

? The security agencies have proved that they are capable of apprehending murderers and criminals. The means by which they caused the quick arrest of the girl who shot and killed the Lebanese in Kumasi, should have been used to arrest those who killed the Ya Na

ADOM FM PHONE-INS

? If the NDC flagbearer, Prof. Atta Mills, claims he is for peace, then he should advise his boss, Rawlings to mind his language when making statements in public. The NPP government is doing better than what the NDC did.

? It has come to our notice that the upgrading of some second cycle institutions in the districts is being selectively done to favour some top NPP Ministers and officials who come from such districts.

? Prof. Atta Mills, as a former head of Internal Revenue Service, Vice-President and head of government’s Economic Management Team should be held responsible for the state of Ghana Telecom and the poor taxation system in the country. He should know better than to blame President Kufuor’s government for the hardships we are facing.

? Prof. Atta Mills was right in saying that, utility bills are too high for the ordinary Ghanaian to afford, so the government should rather consider his statement than to see it as political tool.

? Prof. Atta Mills has been the head of government’s Economic Management Team, so he has every right to complain when something goes wrong. The NPP government should rather consult him for his views on economic issues.

? The NDC’s cry that Ghanaians are going through so much suffering should not be taken serious. During the NDC regime, plantain was imported from our neighbouring countries. They should ask themselves when Ghanaians started suffering.

? Prof. Atta Mills and his NDC should keep quiet and rather enjoy the smooth air of freedom Ghanaians are enjoying than to be condemning everything that the NPP does.

? I can prove with evidence that school fees are more affordable now than they used to be in the NDC regime, so Prof. Atta Mills should not throw dust into the eyes of Ghanaians with his lies against the NPP government. What did he do to save the situation when he was the Vice-President?
