Ghana Wildlife launch conservation fence project

Accra, Sept 21, GNA - The Ghana Wildlife Society at the weekend launched a Conservation Fence Project aimed at mobilising funds to create awareness and to enhance communal knowledge on the effects of degradation of the habitat of endangered species. The ceremony coincided with the beginning of the Community Week celebration of the Standard Chartered Bank as part of its 150th anniversary.

The Bank donated 40 million cedis to the GWS.

Mr Gerald Osei-Boakye, Marketing Manager of the GWS, said the 220 million-cedi Accra Threatened Species Fence Project had two components. He said the first was the erection of a 100 million-cedi fence wall and the other one, the establishment of a 120 million-cedi GWS Communities Conservation Education Fund.

Mr Osei-Boakye said the project would promote public interest in wildlife conservation and urged organisations to contribute to the preservation of the environment.

He said under the project metal billboards would be mounted along the fence to attract attention and public interest in wildlife conservation.

Dr Eramus Owusu, Director of Conservation, said the project provides an opportunity for Corporate-NGO partnership to promote the environment. He declared, "This occasion is not only unique but it fits well into the new paradigm of thinking in natural resource conservation, which is one that recognizes the role of active community participation".

Mrs Florence Hutchful, Area Head, Human Resources of Standard Chartered West Africa, stressed the Bank's commitment to support GWS in the preservation of endangered species.
