Navy flags alert over idle vessel

The Ghana Navy has raised an alert over a vessel that has been abandoned at Akplabanya, a fishing community in Ada East.

This followed a story carried by Class News Monday February 22, on a vessel with no name, which docked there since Saturday February 20, raising fears among the residents.

Following the story, the Ghana Navy dispatched a team to the area to investigate.

Flag Officer Fleet, Commodore Mark Yawson, speaking to Class News, said the Navy immediately alerted National Security and the Ghana Ports and Harbours Authority after it became suspicious.

“We went there, the ship has no name on it and not at anchor, it had gone aground. ‘Aground’ means the vessel has got stuck into the sand closer to the shore and what also concerns us is that [it is] a vessel without a name, IMO number, so there are lots of questions than answers,” he said.

Commodore Yawson noted that the Navy has sent a report to the naval headquarters and to other authorities for action.

“A vessel without a name and has gone aground and nobody has reported gives room for lots of questioning …we are conducting further investigations,” he said.
