The Ministry of education has directed that schools should be closed today following the flood in Accra after torrential rains on Wednesday night have left many lives lost and roads unmotorable.

The Minister of Education Prof. Jane Nana Opoku Agyemang Thursday morning declared the holiday for school children in a radio interview on Citi FM but urged guardians to keep children safe at home. Teachers, on the other hand, are entreated to keep students who are already in school safe until the situation is curtailed.

The disaster that has left communes across Accra submerged according to a Starr FM report has recorded a dead toll of about 95 following the fire outbreak at the Circle filling station, but witnesses at the site fear hundreds may be dead. At the moment, it is unclear what actually caused the Goil Filing station fire outbreak.

NADMO, Fire Service department and the police are currently at the disaster site to recover dead bodies.

Bright in Ashaiman decried the loss of lives and properties saying, “the department of settlement and planning should check the poor settlement planning by the so-called real estate developers in the country”.

Many are weeping at the loss of relatives while hundreds are left stranded as their homes have been completely destroyed by the tragedy.
