Our leaders are becoming "irresponsible" - Allotey Jacobs

Central Regional Chairman of the ruling National Democratic Congress (NDC), Allotey Jacobs, has lambasted the leadership of state institutions in the country for being "irresponsible" and has decried the tendency to read politics into every national issue.

Addressing some pertinent issues relating to fire outbreaks in the nation, Allotey Jacobs warned heads of institutions, agencies and politicians to desist from heaping coals on President John Mahama over "some people's irresponsibility."

Fire razed the Central Medical Stores of the Ghana Health Service (GHS) on Tuesday, 13th January, 2015.

The Central Medical Stores, which is located at Tema in the Greater Accra Region, is the biggest drug storage and distribution outlet in Ghana.

According to Allotey Jacobs, the authorities of the Central Medical Stores should be blamed for the recent fire outbreak.

He recounted that the Central Medical Stores has been in place for ages and the building has since become "dilapidated" and therefore believed the cause of the fire may have emanated from the poor maintenance culture of the workers.

“Some people’s irresponsibility is laid on the door-step of the President. It’s like we’re demeaning the Presidency. It is time we call a spade a spade. If somebody’s irresponsible behaviour causes fire outbreak, you term it also as corruption…What kind of language is this?”

Speaking on Peace FM's "Kokrokoo", Allotey Jacobs insisted that the Health Ministry should decentralize its distribution system and not store up drugs in one particular warehouse.

He therefore took a swipe at critics of the Mahama administration who seem to blame President Mahama over the rampant fire outbreaks in the nation, saying "any given situation, we will make politics out of it…It’s like we, politicians; we’re also irresponsible. We’re also irresponsible. Let’s separate the wheat from the chaff…

“Somebody should be held responsible. That’s what we should talk about as a nation. That is how we build the country...I don’t think that we are showing an exemplary life for our future generation. If this is how we’ll go to build Ghana, then let’s forget it and those culpable will go scot free.”
