GSA fines cheating fuel stations GH¢15, 000

Five fuelling stations in the Northern Region have each been fined GH¢3,000 for under-delivering fuel services to customers.

They were also caught tampering with the seals on dispensing machines which are meant to ensure fuel station operators do not adjust the pumps unnecessarily.

The Northern Regional Officer of the Ghana Standards Authority (GSA), Isaac Hammond, told the B&FT that most fuel stations often engage in such activities, and that the authority will embark on routine check-ups to ensure all of them conform to the standard.

He said the authority embarks on verification exercises every three months to ensure that fuel dispensing pumps at the various fuel stations meet international standards and are offering the required services to the public.

“In the particular area of ensuring fairness in the dispensing of fuel to motorists, certified inspectors go to the fuel stations to ensure that dispensing pumps for retailing petrol, gas oil and kerosene are delivering within the maximum permissible limits of error.

“Fuel stations found to be dispensing fuel with the expected accuracy are given green stickers, while those which fail the test are locked up and marked with red stickers. These are displayed on the dispensing pumps at the fuel stations,” Mr. Hammond said.

He reiterated the commitment of GSA to ensuring that all fuelling stations in the country comply with laws to protect the public from patronising sub-standard products.

He said the Inspectorate Division of GSA will continue to carry out inspection activities to ascertain that all fuel stations comply with the law to avoid any criminality, and those found culpable will be brought to book to deter others.

“I will plead with the public to demand the fabricated 10-litre measuring can known as ‘ntease kruwa’ available at every station; it is meant for motorists to check the amount of fuel dispensed when they are in doubt of the quantities supplied to them,” he added.
