Gov't to establish military base on Alavanyo-Nkonya border

The Vice President, Kwesi Amissah-Arthur has revealed that a permanent military training school will be established between Alavanyo and Nkonya in the Biakoye District of the Volta region.

“We plan to build a permanent military base here that will lead to training, improve the training [among military officers] and some of the other activities that the military people do.”

This move according to the Vice President is an attempt to end the century-old conflict between the two communities.

The Vice President made the announcement after a peace deal with the paramount chiefs of the two feuding communities in attendance was signed.

Amissah-Arthur added that government would budget for the military school by the end of this year.

“We are hopeful that the resources will be found this year in the budget to allow the beginning of this process of putting in permanent structures in the zone.”

The chiefs – Nana Kojo Asiakwa of Nkonya and Togbega Tsedze Atakora VII of Alavanyo – pledged their commitment to the fresh deal.

They were charged to ensure peace for the sake of the next generation.
