GNPC, GNGC takeover fight could worsen power crisis - ACEP

The African Center for Energy Policy (ACEP), has warned that the controversy over the takeover of the Ghana Gas Company could worsen the current power crisis.

Board Chairman of the Ghana gas company has denied claims by the Energy ministry that the takeover of the company by GNPC has been concluded.

In a statement, Prof. Kwesi Botchwey said there has never been a meeting between the Gas Company and the Ministry of Energy to conclude the deal.

But the Head of Research at ACEP, John Peter Amewu in an interview with Starr News said the development is worrying.

“We at the Centre have always been in favour of the GNGC coming under the GNPC for obvious reasons, which we have estimated over the period,” Mr. Amewu said adding: “...What we can see now occurring is boardroom wrangling, pure power play for people’s selfishness”.

Mr. Amewu added: “Don’t forget that this 'dumsor dumsor' that is happening, some Ghanaians are making huge money out of it…there are people sitting up there bringing oil to this country at the expense of the poor citizen and making millions of Cedis and so this kind of people, they wouldn’t expect the system would work”.
