Avram Grant won't abandon Ghana contract in difficult times

Former Chelsea manager Avram Grant has vowed not to abandon his contract with Ghana as the national team coach in difficult times.

The 54-year-old is the new coach of Ghana after agreeing a 27-month contract, the country’s football association announced on Thursday.

Several foreign coaches of Ghana vacate their posts in difficult times which has prompted questions about the commitment of expatriate coaches to the country.

The Israeli, who missed out on winning the Champions League with Chelsea in 2008 after a penalty shootout defeat in the final against Manchester United, insists he will not vacate his post even in difficult times.

“Where am I going to run to? I have a job to do and I am going to do it to the best of my ability,” Avram Grant told a press conference.

“Indeed there may be challenges, but I know that together we can work it out to bring the best out of the Black Stars.

“I won’t run away, I intend to see through my contract and even beyond that.

Grant will lead Ghana in January’s Africa Cup of Nations finals in his first major assignment in Africa, and he is ready for the challenge.

“It’s a very exciting and challenging job because there is a big potential in this country and this country loves football very much,” he said.

“So when people come to me and say ‘are you ready to coach Ghana’ I say yes because I love challenges especially a challenge like this.”

Grant replaces Kwesi Appiah who led the Black Stars to the 2014 World Cup in Brazil but departed the job in September.
