Road accidents: 1,441 killed in 9 months

A total of 1,441 persons were killed in road crashes nationwide during the first nine months of this year. Out of the number, 1,114 were males and 327 were females.

The number of males above 18 years killed amounted to 959 while those below 18 years were 155.

Females above 18 who died were also more than females below 18 who died, with figures at 228 and 99 respectively.

These deaths occurred from 10,061 crashes nationwide involving 15,600 vehicles.

Out of the 15,600 vehicles, commercial vehicles recorded the highest crashes, numbering 6,871, followed by 6,643 private vehicles and 2,086 motorcycles.

Minor cases scored 6,060 cases, serious cases recorded 2,877 cases, and fatal cases scored 1,124, all within the same period.

The Accra Region recorded the highest number of cases with 3,826 crashes.

The breakdown is: 198 fatal; 1,031 serious; and 2,602 minor injuries.

Eastern Region came second with 1,116 crashes, and the breakdown is 157 fatal, 406 serious injuries, and 553 minor injuries.

The Tema Region was in third position with a total of 1,091 cases. The breakdown is as follows: 42 fatal cases, 210 serious injuries, and 839 minor injuries.

The Ashanti, Central, Brong Ahafo, Western, and Volta regions came next with 937, 792, 786, 619, and 510 cases respectively.

The Northern, Upper West and Upper East regions recorded the least crashes with 154, 128 and 102 cases respectively.
