Hard times will stay - Dr. Baah

A Political Science lecturer at the Kwame Nkrumah University of Science and Technology (KNUST) in Kumasi, Dr. Amoako Baah, has observed that government’s approach to reducing hardship in the country would not work.

He pointed out that the National Democratic Congress (NDC) government’s intervention, including a would-be bailout by the International Monetary Fund (IMF), would stabilize things temporarily, but the economic hardship, which is currently biting the populace hard, would resurface.

Dr. Amoako Baah admonished Ghanaians to cut spending by leading moderate lifestyles so as to save them from severe economic conditions which he noted, had become an albatross on the neck of Ghana.

He told Kofi Asante of Nhyira FM – a Kumasi-based radio station – that the government would rely on the IMF bailout to service debts, stating categorically that the IMF bailout would not be the end of the economic quagmire confronting the country.

The KNUST lecturer, sounding like a prophet of doom, predicted that after the IMF bailout had stabilized things for some time, prices of goods and services would begin to shoot up again.

“Things are bad in the country now, and it is going to be worse,” he noted, adding that “The IMF bailout would stabilize things for a short while, and the hard times would resurface.”

Dr. Amoako Baah suggested economic strategy which he claimed could help the people to withstand the worst economic hardship that would soon hit them in the face.

According to him, the people should begin to purchase foodstuffs in bulk and store in their houses, stating that such a strategy would save them from suffering from the daily increase of prices of foodstuffs in the country.
