Plumber Who Bolted After Raping Girl Remanded

If Thomas Quaye, a 20-year-old plumbing apprentice had known that he would be arrested six months after he committed a crime and bolted, he would have stayed and faced the consequences. Now six months after the crime, he has been remanded into prison custody, giving meaning to the adage " the evil that men do lives after them".

He has been arraigned before His Honour kwadwo Owusu's, Esquire's Circuit Court B1 charged with defilement contrary to section 101(2) of act 29 of 1960 as amended by act 554 of 1998.

Prosecuting, Inspector Mary Agbozo of the Women and Juvenile Unit of the Ghana Police Service said that Thomas is a neighbour to the 5-year-old and her parents.

She said in July last year, at about 3pm on the day of the incident, Thomas visited the victim's parents but did not meet them. He met the victim together with her two brothers playing.

According to Inspector Agbozo, Thomas sent the two of them to go and but him food and in their absence took the victim into an uncompleted building and forcibly had sex with her. After satisfying his desire, he allowed her to go and warned her not to tell anyone of her ordeal.

The victim who could not bear the agony she went through told her brothers on their return. One of the brothers in turn told their mother who also informed their father.

On examining the victim who was so feverish and anaemic, she found out that there was an unusual opening in her vagina. Together they reported to the Odorkor Police who referred them to WAJU.

Thomas went into hiding to avoid arrest till the 15th of this month when he was arrested by the victim's father and sent to WAJU. After careful investigations, he was put before the Court.
