Regional Minister Calls For Revitalization of Agriculture

Zebilla (Upper East), 8 Dec.,

Mr.. Donald Adabere, Upper East Regional Minister has called on District Assemblies in the area to set aside 20 percent of the common fund to be used as a revolving credit to farmers. He said this would help revitalise agriculture, especially in the cultivation of rice in the region's low lands. Mr.. Adabere was addressing a durbar of Chiefs and farmers at Zebilla as part of activities marking this year's national farmers day in the region. he said the fact that the winner of the national best farmer award for last year hailed from the Upper East Region was ample evidence that in spite of the region's harsh climatic conditions, the farmers still had a lot to offer. "This a challenge to the youth as embodied in the theme for this year, which is sustainable national food security: A challenge to the youth", He added. Mr.. Adabere told the people about the early warning signals from the ministry of food and agriculture indicating that the region was heading for an unprecedented food shortage and urged prompt remedial action from government to avert a crisis situation. Alhaji Issaka Akparibo from the Bawku East District, was adjudged the region's best farmer. For His prize, he received a cornmill, sewing machine, a pair of Wellington boots, three cutlasses and a certificate.
