ECOWAS must pull down regional borders - Mahama

President John Mahama says the Economic Community of West African States (ECOWAS) must dismantle hurdles frustrating free movement among member states.

“We need to push the initiative of the single border crossing point, because our people face a lot of hurdles when they travel from one country to another,” he said.

Mr. Mahama said he is happy the issue was discussed at the two-day summit of the ECOWAS Parliament held in Accra.

The summit has been focusing on the issue of “free movement of people and goods in the sub-region.”

President Mahama said to achieve free movement among member states, “We also have to minimise the road checks as much as possible, because the security services often harass citizens going about their normal businesses.”

According to him, “one of the priorities of the ECOWAS institution is to facilitate trade between our countries in order to create a larger market for all of us.
