Despite the denial from the Office of Nana Akufo-Addo that he is campaigning for his favorites ahead of the New Patriotic Party’s (NPP’s) National Delegates’ Conference, a member of the ruling NDC government communications team is insisting that the NPP 2012 Flagbearer’s return from UK was to influence delegates to vote for candidates of his choice.
Former Chief of Staff under the erstwhile Kufuor administration, Kwadwo Mpiani, is reported to have raised concerns over the rumors that Nana Addo has been campaigning for some people contesting for executive positions.
Mr. Mpiani said such a move from a potential Flagbearer could be dangerous for party unity. But spokesperson for Nana Akufo-Addo, Mustapha Hamid maintained there is no truth in the reports being peddled.
He explained that it will be difficult for Nana Addo as an individual, who has a stake in the NPP “not to have preferences; after all, he is also going to vote for candidates, so definitely he has a preference but as an experienced politician, he will not openly show support and campaign for specific candidates”.
Mr. Hamid maintained that Nana Addo will not go against his principles of democracy and will, therefore, not interfere in the choice of people to lead the party.
But in an interview with Peacefmonline.com, Alhaji Naziru Mohammed dared the camp of the twice defeated NPP flagbearer to deny reports of his (Nana Addo’s) alleged secret meeting with his favorite aspirants ostensibly to mount a strategy to win their respective positions in the upcoming delegates’ congress.
“Nana Akufo-Addo met some national executives to plan a strategy that he (Nana) cannot work with Paul Afoko and Kwabena Agyapong…his comeback from UK was to deny certain aspirants the chance to serve the party at the national executive level because he sees them as a threat to his Presidential ambition. The problem within NPP is Nana Addo and not the party….Nii Teiko Tagoe was acting in the interest of Nana Akufo-Addo. Nana Addo is the cause of NPP’s disarray, I am telling you and until they get rid of him, they will never see peace in their party,” Naziru Mohammed alleged.
