Referendum on constitutional reforms ‘likely in November’

Chairman of the Constitution Review and Implementation Committee (CRIC) Professor Emmanuel Victor Oware Dankwa has hinted that Ghanaians are likely to go into a referendum in November this year.

That is likely to be held concurrently with the district assembly elections, Prof. Dankwah noted.

He said already the Electoral Commission (EC) and the National Commission on Civic Education (NCCE) are being talked to to make the programme a success.

Prof. Dankwah made this revelation on TV3’sNews @10 on Monday, March 17.

He said among key reviews to the current constitution are the abolition of the death penalty, the determination of emoluments of Article 71 office holders by an independent commission and a President seeking parliamentary approval before declaring war.

The last time a referendum was held in Ghana was on April 28, 1992.

However, this year’s will be the first for constitutional amendments.
