Confusion over NLC chairmanship slot; GFL heads for court

The Ghana Federation of Labour (GFL) has dragged the Leadership of the Trades Union Congress (TUC) to court to stop it from foisting onto the National Labour Commission (NLC), certain nominees for its Chairmanship slot.

Per the Labour Act, the chairman of the NLC is nominated by Organised Labour in consultation with the Ghana Employers Association.

The GFL, however, argues that the correct procedure has not been exhausted in the nomination process.

The Federation accuses TUC Secretary General, Kofi Asamoah, of unilaterally submitting some names to the president for confirmation without recourse to the GEA.

A board member of the Federation, Benjamin Mingle, told XYZ News that though organised labour met and agreed on certain names which are yet to be run by the Ghana Employers’ Association (GEA), no sooner had the list come out than Kofi Asamoah submitted the list to the presidency.

The Federation wonders why Asamoah is allegedly short-circuiting the process.

It is, therefore, heading for court to stop Asamoah and the minister of employment and labour relations from submitting the list to the president.
