SSNIT warns defaulting employers

The Social Security and National Insurance Trust (SSNIT) Koforidua Area Manager Leslie Arde-Acquah has issued a stern warning to defaulting employers.

He said defaulters facing court action must appear before the court on scheduled dates until the court orders otherwise. In an interview, he advised workers to regularly check their SSNIT accounts.

He said workers who have not registered with SSNIT must do so immediately since it would guarantee to secure pension in the future.

The fact that the workers do not have SSNIT accounts does not mean employers should not deduct social security contributions, Leslie Arde-Acquah said.

Mr Arde-Acquah said contributors, who do not have SSNIT accounts, should contact the nearest SSNIT office to open on accounts.

He noted that SSNIT was pursuing a rigorous operation to drag errant employers to court. He observed that some employers also under declare their number of staff to the disadvantage of others. He said that the law does not exempt casual workers from contributing to the scheme. “SSNIT is leaving no stone unturned in ensuring that every Ghanaian worker gets his due after active service,” he averred. The SSNIT boss used the opportunity to appeal to persons in the informal sector to endeavour to make contributions to SSNIT for their own good.

SSNIT is not there for just the elite or middle income earners but for all, he said.

The SSNIT scheme, he noted, protects every worker against the loss of income as a result of old age, permanent disability and death.
