Ghana's media landscape is like a jungle - Wereko-Brobby

The former Chief Executive Officer of the Volta River Authority has painted a bleak picture of the media landscape on the occasion of the World Press Freedom Day.

Dr. Charles Wereko-Brobby stated that the media landscape is like a jungle, where professionalism has been thrown to the dogs.

He said these when delivering a lecture organised by the Ghana Journalists Association, to mark today’s World Press Freedom Day.

With regards to the controversial issue- Media freedom and Informed Populace, Dr Wereko-Brobby stated that the proliferation of the media has not had the expected impact.

He added that control of frequency in the country by the NCA is injurious to press freedom.

Dr. Wereko-Brobby said the only way the media can insulate itself from political control, is to hand over management responsibility entirely to the National Media Commission.

A communication lecturer Dr Messan Mawugbe has warned that compromising responsible media practice could in turn, lead to the undermining of media freedom.

He told XYZ News that media practitioners must take their responsibilities very seriously so as not to cannibalize on their own professional freedoms.
