16 bodies retrieved from mining pit

At least 16 bodies have been retrieved from an illegal mining pit that collapsed at Kyekyewere near Dunkwa-on-Offin, in the in the Upper Denkyira East Municipality of the Central region Monday morning.

The 16 bodies, comprising 2 females and 14 males who were between 18 and 50 years, got trapped and killed under the pit which they entered illegally.

According to Teacher Korsah of SparkFM, an affiliate station of PeaceFM in Dunkwa-On-Offin, the death toll could rise since more people are feared trapped in the pit.

The concession, according to reports, belongs to a private mining firm.

A rescue team comprising personnel from the National Disaster Management Organization (NADMO), the Police Service, the Ghana National Fire Service and the Ghana Armed Forces (GAF) are at the scene in an attempt to rescue survivors.
