Ban on scrap metals won’t affect export – Trade ministry

The Trade and Industry Ministry has allayed fears that the plan to ban the export of ferrous scrap metals could affect the export of other metals.

The ministry is seeking Parliamentary approval to legalize the current administrative ban on the scrap metals.

This is primarily to save and protect the local steel industry by making raw materials easily available to them for production.

The ministry’s Acting Director of Communication and Public Affairs, Nana Akrasi Sarpong, explains to Joy Business the ban if implemented would not necessarily affect exporters of other metals.

Meanwhile, government is stepping up efforts to establish an International Tariff Advisory Committee to deal with unfair trade practices in the country’s local industry.

The committee is to ensure fairness in the tariff regime by addressing petitions on dumping of cheap and inferior imported goods on the local market.

Trade and Industry Minister, Haruna Iddrisu says the country would no longer tolerate such activities.

He tells Joy Business he expects the committee to be set up by the end of the year.
