NAGRAT, GNAT strike as WASSCE begins

The National Association of Graduate Teachers (NAGRAT) and Ghana National Association of Teachers (GNAT) have directed their members to stay away from the classroom from Monday, March 18 2013.

This directive comes at the time when senior high school students are preparing to write their West African Senior School Certificate Examination (WASSCE) in about four weeks time.

The teachers have also resolved to boycott invigilating the upcoming Basic Education Certificate Examination and WASSCE examinations.

At a joint news conference in Accra on Friday the association said “following government’s failure to resolve some grievances relating to the service conditions of Ghanaian teachers that we had earlier presented, we have asked our members to stay off the classroom.”

They group noted that the indefinite strike action is to press home their concerns, which include: the non-negotiation of category 2 and 3 allowances for teachers, delays in the promotion of teachers, refusal of fair wages and salary omission (FWSC) to negotiate retention premium for teachers among other complaints.

The teachers say their situation has become hopeless; following their migration onto the Single Spine Salary Structure.
