NPP: Afari Gyan auctioned election 2012 to Prez Mahama

A member of the communication team of the NPP has accused the Chairman of the Electoral Commission, Dr. Afari Gyan of auctioning the results of the 2012 elections to the highest bidder; President John Dramani Mahama.

Richard Asante Yeboah claims Ghanaians had confidence and hope that the electoral body could do an efficient job, but instead the EC decided to subvert the will of the people by declaring the polls for an undeserving candidate after the nation injected over Ghc 100,000,000 of the tax-payers monies to conduct the general elections.

The NPP Communicator, who made these remarks on Okay fm’s "Ghana Decides” program, added that the conduct of the EC in the just gone-by elections, has resulted in most people losing confidence in the electoral system as witnessed in the two recent by-elections held in Akatsi and Buem, all in the Volta Region.

Indeed some have called on government to look into possible reasons for the low turnout, especially in the Buem constituency by-election.

Just over 30% of the about 37,000 eligible voters participated in the election, which saw the NDC candidate, Daniel Kosi Ashiamah emerge as the winner and will now replace the late Henry Ford Kamel, the previous Buem MP who died on Christmas Day last year. He drew 9366 out of the 11,066 votes cast, far ahead of his closest contender, Nelson Asafo of the Convention People’s Party, who polled 726 votes.

Richard Asante Yeboah was commenting on the presidential election petition case which is currently before the Supreme Court.

The EC, has filed an amended response to the further particulars the petitioners presented by stating categorically that after it examined and analyzed its records, “the analysis confirmed that, no voters were allowed to vote without verification at any polling station.”

The petitioners- Nana Akufo-Addo, Dr Mahamudu Bawumia, Jake Obetsebi Lamptey had cited as one of the irregularities, failure by presiding officers to ensure that all voters were verified before voting.

In an amended response filed at the registry of the Supreme Court on its behalf by it solicitors Lynes, Quashie-Idun and Co, the EC denied claims that voters were allowed to vote without undergoing verification, in that the voting continued on December 8, 2012 at about 400 polling stations where slowness or malfunction of machines was recorded on voting day on December 7, 2012.

Whilst the EC completely rejected the claim by the petitioners, the third respondent which is the National Democratic Congress admits that people may have voted without being verified but they were quick to add that voting without verification is not necessarily against the law.

The NPP Communicator thus claims per the party's tabulation of pink sheets, quite a number of people, more than 600,000 voted without verification.

He was of the conviction that the Supreme Court will rule in the NPP's favour so that the rightful person, in this case Nana Akufo Addo, takes over the mantle of leadership.
