GMA strike is illegal - NLC

The National Labour Commission (NLC) has described the strike embarked upon by Doctors in the country as ‘illegal’ and have expressed shock by the decision of Doctors after what the Commission described as positive progress in negotiations to resolve their grievances.

The members of the Ghana Medical Association (GMA) began a nationwide strike although it is attending to emergency cases.

Speaking to Citi News the Executive Secretary of NLC, Breku Boadu, stated that “If we want to strictly apply the law then that strike is illegal. The law states that you notify your employer and also the National Labour Commission, sending an ultimatum I don’t think that is what the law says.”

According to him, he was taken aback when he heard of the doctors’ actions to embark on a strike.

“When I heard that the President of the Ghana Medical Association stating that the issues have still not been dealt with and therefore they are embarking on a strike action I was taken aback.”

Mr. Breku explained that there was an earlier arbitration “so the Commission indicated that the decisions that were made during the earlier compulsory arbitration should be implemented.”

He promised that other administrative issues would be sorted out with the Ghana Health Service Council.
