The convincing victory of John Mahama and NDC has actually prevented what this writer implied. The rejected campaign message of Nana Addo and his NPP sought to actually portray some part of Ghana especially the North as being irrelevant. This was echoed by Jake when he said that biometric verification machines which were not working in the North on 7th Dec worked perfectly on 8th Dec. Instead of expressing anger at EC's actions that would have disenfranchised 100s of Northerners, NPP was angry that they were made to vote. And some of them went on to say that, had it not been free education, that Northerners including those in parliament could not have schooled. While students in the North pay all fees except feeding fee which is about 130 Ghana cedis, the message is being propagated in Ghana as if Northern students are schooling freely and that John Mahama didn't want to extend free-education to 'Southerners'. All these are unfortunate. One Ghana, One People! No wonder the ancestry of NPP wanted a federal govt. Surprisingly, they still erroneously believe in what they termed 5 Akan regions. Except two regions, the others are named geographically. Some of us thus hope that in the next few years, Ashanti and Brong-Ahafo regions have to be renamed before the Fantes and Gas agitate for the renaming of Greater Accra and Central regions as Oguaa and Ga regions respectively. But what is important is that the Dutch disease is so infective that parts of African countries blessed with natural resources are those that are a curse. The North with its perceived poverty can actually turn things around when it comes to the worst. Thank God, we went democracy in 1992 with the majority of Ghanaians happy with one Ghana evinced by the widespread intermarriages.

SIR JOHN AND HIS HENCHMEN ARE DELIBERATELY CAUSING MISCHIEF. NPP ASSEMBLING VERY POWERFUL LEGAL TEAM. THIS IS PURELY PSYCHOLOGICAL;THIS IS JUST TO FOOL GHANAIANS THAT THEY HAVE A REALLY GOOD CASE TO FIGHT IN COURT WHEN IN FACT THEY DO NOT HAVE ANY GENUINE EVIDENCE. NOW THAT THEY HAVE MANAGED TO ALSO TRY TO POINT OUT THAT THERE IS A JUDGE ON THE SUPREME COURT PANEL WHO IS NOT SUPPOSED TO BE THERE, THEIR SUPPORTERS ARE NOW PSYCHED UP TO VIOLENTLY OBJECT TO A NO CASE AGAINST NPP AKUFO ADDO. PLEASE GHANAIANS, DO NOT TAKE AKUFO ADDO'S "ALL DIE BE DIE" SAYING LIGHTLY, HE MEANS EVERY BIT OF IT. NEXT TIME ROUND IT WILL BE A SUPPOSED "SPONTANEOUS REACTION" BY THE SUPPORTERS TO BURN GHANA. IN ORDER TO AVOID BLAME FOR WHAT HIS SUPPORTERS WILL DO, AKUFO ADDO HAS AGAIN COME OUT TO DECLARE PUBLICLY THAT HE WILL ACCEPT THE COURT DECISION. FOR AKUFO ADDO, IT IS NOW CLEAR TO ME THAT EITHER HE BECOMES THE PRESIDENT OF GHANA OR GHANA SHOULD BURN PERIOD.

It is not for nothing that the constitution enforces our Presidents to swear to "preserve, protect and defend" the constitution of Ghana....so help me God. It is a common court order that whilst there is a case in court, all parties respect the independence of the judges and refrain from any discussion that will be prejudicial. The president has already sworn to preserve, protect and defend the constitution, which also include but not limiting to accepting the ruling of the Supreme Court, so why ask him to make statements when the matter is pending before the court.
It is only the person's with ill intent who will go out and be making noises that "I'll accept the court's verdict'. We all have nothing to do or say but accept the court's verdict so please stop making those ugly noises and let Ghana move on.

Whilst agreeing with the writer that Nkrumah's boarding school strategy brought us some level of togetherness, it did not instill in us the paramount issue of patriotism which for me is overriding in nation building. Besides agreeing with you on this one point Mr. Writer, you missed the point big time.
Mahama's 200 SHS mantra is to solve a big problem in the interim, access to senior high school by all within a certain period of time. At the moment, some 53% of qualified students do not get. Access because of lack of infrastructure. The solution is construct new schools in localities without them so that many people will have access.
In 1991, the Rawlings PNDC turned so many JSS which had the minimal infrastructure into day secondary school. These schools bridged a critical gap at the time, today, more than 50% of those have been turned into boarding facilities. What Mahama intend doing is a quick fix of a looming problem in our time....the uneducated will not have the requisite skills to get jobs in a fast modernizing society and these individuals can become dangerous to us as a nation.
I also disagree with your other point of militarization as a mechanism to instilling a sense of discipline and nationalism in our youth. We have national service as a mechanism. There is wide inter-marriages among tribes and ethnic groupings. Job search has made many people with varying ethnic backgrounds to move and stay in other places. Our society is really intertwined and I bet you on that basis, nothing, I mean nothing will happen to us as a nation.
The current state of our polarization is a result of desperate politicians who want to rule and not lead us. It is also because of our winner takes all kind of arrangement in our current political dispensation. The very day we get a leader who is discerning and reaches out to the minority, that very day, we will begin a new era to real nation building. Until then we will remain as we are unless those of us privileged to be educated, tone down our penchant for dividing this nation.
God bless our homeland Ghana

Boardinization is not the panacea. We have had it since. National consciousness is a program that must be inculcated in kids right from nursery school before formative years run out.

It is true that SOME of us had the privilege of boarding education and my suggestion would be to strengthen existing boarding schools. However have you considered the costs? It is very expensive to run boarding schools. It is I also worth noting that in most developed countries, MOST secodnary schools are local and day, but that does not make them less effective.
Most of us made lasting and strong friendships along the whole way, including at University where sadly much fewer of your classmates from primary and secondary school are likely to meet. I believe we should encourage the president's initiative but put pressure on them to ensure that it is all properly thought out and planned as well as resourced and not buildings put up.
If we go by Nkrumah's 1960s Schools which I admit were build as boarding schools (and from which I was educated), one can argue for SOME of the new schools to be larding but if you make one boarding in my district, why not do the sme in all the other districts? It is not easy either way.

Yes, those schools gave the Children a "nationalistic" feeling. That was very positive. Priorities must be shifted again, to support a Free Boarding School for the whole Ghanaian Kids, instead of Parliamentarians riding free in SUVs on the streets of Accra.
There was DEVELOPMENT in Ghana during the 1960s, but now, it seems Polititians go to Accra to scramble and grab as much as possible for themselves and their cronies, without knowing their responsibilities for the Nation.

I don't really see the unifying force in boarding school argument. I think Mahama is on the right path for constructing day schools. If we focus on teacher training and continues teacher and student assessments, going to your local day school, would be as good as going far away to a boarding school. Day students in Accra Academy are as unified as those who are/went to boarding, like wise kids in schools in the western countries which are mostly day schools, are even more unified and have stronger alumni than Ghanaian boarding school. Building schools alone is not the answer, we should have strong teachers and an excellent curriculum.
