Armed Robber Overpowered

An alleged robbery suspect met his match when he, in the company of two other accomplices, broke into a house to rob and ended up being overpowered by his victim, who jabbed him from the floor and threw him across the room and overpowered the suspect.

Charles Agbeko, the accused person, sustained injuries after the robbery operation went bad and his accomplices abandoned him. The brother of the complainant entered the room and helped him report the accused person to the police.

The complainant was the Chief Executive Officer of Multi Mix TV Productions, Emmanuel Agbekey.

Agbeko, a welder, has been put before an Accra Circuit Court and charged with possession of explosives, firearms and ammunition without lawful authority; conspiracy to commit crime and attempted robbery.

He pleaded not guilty to the offence and has been remanded in police custody to re-appear on October 2, 2012.

DSP Patrick Morkeh, the prosecuting officer who narrated facts leading to the arrest of the accused person, told the court that the complainant was a resident of Teshie Zongo, while the accused person resided at Aflao in the Volta Region.

He said on September 5, 2012, the complainant was asleep with his wife and children, when he heard a bang on his door and three persons including Agbeko, broke into his house and ordered him to surrender all his money.

According to him, the welder who was wielding a gun stepped forward and used its butt to hit the complainant, making him fall on his bed. However, the complainant quickly grabbed the accused person, got up and threw him against the louvre blades in the room.

He said the gun of the accused, in the process, fell and a struggle ensued in the room. The brother of the complainant, Jerry, heard the noise and came to the scene to help his brother overpower the accused before the police were called.

Furthermore, he stated that they retrieved one short gun and three live cartridges from him while a police patrol team, led by D/C Inspector George Antwi Tanoh, arrived at the scene to arrest the accused person.

The prosecutor said investigations were on-going.
