PPP descends on Woyome over PAC's 'no show'

The Progressive People's Party (PPP) says it is highly distressed about Mr. Alfred Agbesi Woyome’s blatant refusal to offer himself to the Public Accounts Committee (PAC) of Parliament to be interrogated.

The businessman has so far turned down three invitations by the Committee for questioning on some monies he allegedly collected from government through fraudulent means.

PAC Chairman, Mr. Kan Dapaah, on Thursday said the committee was getting increasingly frustrated by Mr. Woyome’s decision, and announced that it was writing to the Inspector General of Police (IGP) for the necessary action to be taken against him.

In a strong worded statement signed by PPP General Secretary, Kofi Asamoah-Siaw, and released in Accra on Friday, the PPP said it could not comprehend why some senior government officials, including ministers, were running to the defence of the embattled business magnate.

“Even more disturbing is the defence of his actions by the NDC and some government officials. They should stop defending Alfred Woyome! In other democracies, you cannot find Ministers of State running to the defence of those who have committed crimes against the Republic, who go on to survive the next elections,” the statement bluntly stated.

According to the PPP, Mr. Woyome 'seeking refuge' in the NDC would amount to gross violation of the national constitution, and stressed that it is important that authorities impress upon Mr. Woyome to submit himself to the process.

Consequently, the statement labelled Mr. Woyome's behaviour and that of the government officials as shameful, treacherous and one that could compromise national cohesion.

“... This kind of society is not sustainable. This does not bring peace and unity...Mr. Woyome must be compelled to face the full rigors of the law,” it added.

The PPP continued that the only way to stop this disregard for authority that renders our institutions ineffective is to cause a constitutional reform to separate the power of prosecution from the Attorney General.

The statement affirmed that it is based on such dastardly acts that its flag bearer, Dr. Papa Kwesi Nduom, is urging reforms in the national constitution, which will help institutionalize incorruptible leadership.

“We call on all Ghanaians to join the PPP’s crusade for Incorruptible Leadership and vote for the PPP to save our nation from this conspiracy of the elite to defraud the state by looting its resources,” the statement added.
