UER Education Directorate appeals for infrastructure

Mr. Paul Apanga, Upper East Regional Director of Education has said for the newly created districts to have direction and focus, there was the need for appropriate infrastructure to house education officers.

He said the current infrastructure for the four districts are deplorable, especially in the Talensi Nabdam, Garu Tempane and Kassena Nankana West, where the offices are housed in make-shift classroom blocks.

The Director made this known at a meeting in Bolgatanga and called on the Regional Coordinating Council to come to the aid of the Regional Education Directorate.

Mr. Apanga said the only storey building for the Regional Directorate is also in a deplorable state as the roof leaks badly with cracks on the building, which over the years had been at the mercy of the weather.

He said the Municipal Directorate, which was built in the 1960s, is not convenient for management to improve their efficiency.

He said the region currently had eleven directors including two municipal directors and seven district directors.

Mr. Apanga was worried that with the four new districts coming up in the region, four more directorates would have to be created which would require postings of deputy directors to man those areas.

He therefore called for the rehabilitation of the official residence of the Regional Director which had not been habitable because of its poor state, as well as the creation of housing and office accommodation in the districts for the education officers.

He commended, however, government for improving the infrastructural situation of basic and senior high schools in the region.**
