School furniture at mercy of the weather at Ho

Hundreds of dual desks have been left to the mercy of the weather at the Ho Municipal Assembly works yard.

Some of the desks, which appeared to have been kept in the open for several months, have been affected by the vagaries of the weather.

The desks have occupied the whole yard with vehicles running into them for lack of space to maneuver.

Checks at the Municipal Education Directorate indicated that, about 17 schools in the Municipal area are in dire need of desks. About 12 out of the 17 such schools are in the Ho Township and needed about 889 desks.

Mr Dickson Pi-Bansah, Public Relations Officer of the Municipal Education Directorate, said his outfit had submitted a list of schools which needed desks to the Municipal Assembly two months ago.

Some pupils in the Municipal area carry tables and chairs from the house to school daily.

Mr. Benoni Glalah, a retired Educationist who drew the Ghana News Agency’s (GNA) attention to the situation said “this is a clear case of public servants being careless about tax-payers money”.

He said lack of desks were some of the little things that could cause pupils to drop out of school.

Mr. Emmanuel Dogbevia, Head of the Works Department of the Assembly told the GNA that, a number of attempts to get the contractor to convey the desks to the schools proved futile and that the Assembly had written to the schools to come for the desks on Friday.**
