NDC Youth react to Ultimatum by Concerned Youth

The Youth Wing of the Kpone-Katamanso Constituency of the National Democratic Congress (NDC) has commended the Member of Parliament for the area for his role in ensuring improvement in the living standards of the constituents.

The commendation came at a press conference held by the NDC Youth at Sebrepor near Michel Camp in reaction to allegations made against Nii Laryea Afotey Agbo, the MP, by a group calling itself the Concerned Youth of Kpone-Katamanso.

The Concerned Youth gave the President a two-week ultimatum to revoke the appointment of Nii Laryea as the new Greater Accra Regional Minister or face demonstrations.

Until his appointment, Nii Laryea was a Minister of State at the Presidency.

The Concerned Youth said even though they recognized that it was the constitutional mandate of the President to appoint people to such positions, they felt it must be done in the interest of the constituency and the country at large.

They alleged that Nii Laryea had failed as the MP for the constituency and his appointment would only worsen his inability to perform satisfactorily.

They said the constituency could not have security, employment, secondary school, water, hospital and good road and challenged the MP to account for what “he uses his share of the MP’s Common Fund for in the constituency.”

The group said the MP’s achievements were not impressive to merit a reward of being appointed the Regional Minister.

“Kpone-Katamanso is fed up with Nii Laryea, his appointment would only add up to the bad policies of the NDC,” the group added.

Addressing a press conference by the NDC Youth, its spokesperson Mr. Joseph Akuerteh Tettey, Youth Organizer, said the constituency had not been left out of the “Better Ghana Agenda.”

Mr. Tettey said the main Kpone/Barrier and Kpone/Tema roads that the NPP left to rot and never saw bitumen “are now being tarred.”

Also, drainage systems in the constituency which never got attention from the NPP are now being attended to with a great zeal,” he said.

The spokesperson said the Zenu/Katamanso road is under construction and could be completed any moment from now, while the Katamanso-Appolonia-Oyibi stretch, has been awarded on contract.

On the MP’s Common Fund, Mr. Tettey catalogued a number of achievements chalked by the MP, and said these include the provision of computers and decks for some schools.

The schools include Kpone Presbyterian, Katamanso, Appolonia, Bawaleshie, Zenu TMA Numbers One, Two, Three and Four, Junior High Schools, Ebenezer Hill, Bethlehem Divine Healer’s, TMA, and Michel Camp Services Basic and JHS.

Mr Tettey said the MP had built a canteen for the School Feeding Programme at Kpone, awarded scholarships to 62 brilliant but needy students in the constituency to pursue further studies at the tertiary level.

The MP has provided street lights to communities in the constituency and has also donated cement and roofing sheets to some communities for their projects.

The NDC Youth, therefore, expressed their profound appreciation to the President for the honour done the constituency by appointing their MP to the high office of Regional Minister.**
