Ghana National Malaria Control Programme supplies treated mosquitoes

The Ghana National Malaria Control Programme, has launched a malaria control programme aimed at supplying treated mosquito nets free of charge to people in Nkoranza South Municipality.

The programme is being supported by the World Health Organisation, United States Agency for International Development and donor agencies.

Under the programme, dubbed: “Long Lasting Insecticide Nets, stakeholders including community leaders would select trustworthy and responsible people to assist in the exercise.

Madam Salamatu Ibrahim, Municipal Director of Health Services, made this known at a stakeholders’ forum organised by the Health Management Team in Nkoranza.

She said community leaders are expected to arrange for funds to transport the nets.

Madam Ibrahim explained that the programme is aimed at controlling malaria cases since the disease had continuously been identified as the top most health problem.

The directorate has zoned the area into six for the effectiveness of the exercise, which are Nkoranza, Bonsu, Donkro-Nkwanta, Ayerede, Ahyiayem/Akuma and Nkwabeng.

Mr Charles Kwasi Gyamfi, Municipal Disease Control Officer, urged stakeholders to offer the necessary support and contribute effectively to the success of the programme.

He said officials from the health directorate would visit the communities and households to evaluate the exercise and find out whether the people would use the nets or not.

Mr Gyamfi called on the beneficiaries to sleep in the nets to prevent contracting malaria.**
