Close down our school - Students

Akotaa (Ash), Feb. 6, GNA – As a result of the continuous defecation in their classrooms, the school children of the Akotaa Basic School in the Atwima Mponua District, have appealed to the government to close down their school.

They said it would be better for them to be absorbed into a nearby school to enable them continue their education adding that they are fed up with the constant defecation in their classrooms by some unscrupulous people in the community.

Miss Mavis Annin, Senior Girls Prefect of the school, told the GNA that the school children are unable to concentrate on their studies and it was time the GES relocated them to enable them have the peace of the mind to study.

She recalled that on November 2011, both the Junior High and the primary schools had to be closed down due to the same attitude of the town-folks and called the chiefs, members of the Unit Committee and the Parent Teachers Association to take a concerted action to expose and arrest those who are defecating in their classrooms.

Nii Amon Kotey, the Atwima Mponua District Director of Education when contacted, confirmed the story saying the headmaster of the school had officially informed his office of the situation.

He said a similar situation last year led to the closure of the school, adding that the teachers in the school have threatened to leave the school if nothing was done immediately to address the problem in the community.

Nii Kortey said a meeting had been held between the directorate and the community and it has been agreed that the community would engage a watchman for the school as first step to find lasting solution to the problem.
