12 die in Gushiegu clashes

Twelve dead bodies have so far been recovered after unknown assailants attacked Fulani herdsmen in the Northern Region town of Gushiegu, Wednesday.

Ten more have sustained varying degrees of injuries District Police Commander ACP George Tuffuor confirmed to Joy News.

The attack occurred the dawn of Wednesday with the dead said to be all fulanis.

District Chief Executive of the area Alhaji Fuseini Alhassan in an interview said they all “woke up to the mess.”

Alhaji Fuseini Alhassan could not immediately tell the cause of the violence but said an emergency District Security meeting has been called to begin investigations into the matter.

Fuseini Alhassan appeared shocked by the incident, more so when there had not been any prior tension between the indigenes and the nomads.

He was however emphatic that the attack was not masterminded by the villagers themselves but by assailants who are on the run.

Security has been beefed up to ensure the situation does not degenerate. The injured have been rushed to the Tamale Hospital.
